Matthew Tomkins (violin)






Matthew Tomkins is a Core Player with Melbourne Chamber Orchestra. He is also a violinist with the Flinders Quartet and a member of Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.

Matthew Tomkins began learning violin at the age of 5, and his teachers included Marco van Pagee, Spiros Rantos and Mark Mogilevski. Following his completion of a Bachelor of Engineering and a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Melbourne, Matthew was appointed to the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra in 2000.

Matthew is well known to Melbourne audiences as a member of the Flinders Quartet, formed in 2000. The quartet has studied extensively with Gabor Takacs-Nagy and William Hennessy, and performed with Menahem Pressler, Geoff Nuttall, Genevieve Lacey, Slava Grigoryan, the Goldner Quartet, David Thomas and Paul Dean.

Festival appearances have included the Melbourne International, Bangalow, Port Fairy, Castlemaine, Tyalgum, Ballarat Goldfields, Camden Haven, Macedon and Woodend festivals, as well as many live recordings and broadcasts for ABC Classic FM and 3MBS.

The quartet has twice been resident at the Banff Centre, participated in the International Musicians Seminar at Prussia Cove in 2003 and in that year were selected to compete in both the Melbourne International Chamber Music Competition and The London International String Quartet Competition. They have performed in Canada, Switzerland, Sweden, Singapore and the U.K.

Matthew has also been a regular performer in the MSO Chamber Players series. He has tutored for the Australian Youth Orchestra and teaches chamber music and violin at the University of Melbourne.

When not playing the violin Matthew is most likely to be found on a golf course or cheering on the Navy Blues.
