Michael Dahlenburg (cello) is a Core Player with Melbourne Chamber Orchestra. Since 2008, Michael has been an Emerging Artist with the Australian Chamber Orchestra. He has also performed casually with Orchestra Victoria and the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. He is also a founding member of Hamer Quartet.
Michael has performed as soloist with the Melbourne University Chamber Orchestra, Melbourne Youth Orchestra and Melbourne New Orchestra. He has been broadcast live and recorded live broadcast as soloist and chamber musician on 3MBS and ABC Classic FM.
He has been undertaking a Bachelor of Music at The University of Melbourne since 2004, majoring in cello performance. He has been a Scholarship holder at the Australian National Academy of Music since 2008.
Michael has received invaluable guidance and tutelage from Marrianne Hunt, Molly Kadarauch, Professor John Hopkins, William Hennessy and Timo Veiko-Valve, principal cellist of the ACO. Currently studies continue with Howard Penny at ANAM.
Michael has been the recipient of several awards including the Sid Curry Memorial Award and Eric Reader Cello award in 2002, the Tallis Bursary in both 2004 and 2006; he was also the winner of the Lyceum Club’s prestigious Margaret Sutherland Bursary in 2006 and in 2007 Michael was the winner of the Mozart Concerto Competition for strings at the University of Melbourne. He was also awarded the Gwenn Prockter cello award for best final year recital in 2007.
Michael gratefully acknowledges the generous support he has received from numerous foundations and private donors including the Tallis Foundation, Hamer Family Fund and Paul Davies of Arts Music @ the Convent, all of whom contributed to the purchase of his ‘cello, a J. Charles, 1780.
